          OceanSense: Realtime Ocean Environmental Sensing 



1. OceanSense   [Demonstration]  [OsnMap]  [Crossbow]  [Video]

 OceanSense deployed TelosB motes off the seashore to monitor the typical phenomena of the sea. In order to make the sensor node water-proof, we encapsulate the TelosB motes into the bottles. And we fit each node with a lightweight supporting equipment, which can float over the sea surface and raise the sensor node 1m high above the sea surface. The picture of one OceanSense node is shown in Fig. 1(a). The length of the whole OceanSense node is 3m. Fig. 1(b) presents the picture of the sensor nodes floating over the sea surface of the real deployment. Eighteen sensor nodes are deployed off the seashore with another two deployed on the seashore. And one sink is deployed on the seashore in the room. The two sensor nodes on the seashore is used to transmit the packets from the off seashore nodes to the sink. The locations of these twenty sensor nodes and the sink are estimated with GPS equipment and labeled on Google Map as shown in Fig.1 (c). The whole monitoring area is about 300m*100m. 



2. Development Platform and Client System   [Demonstration]  [OsnMap]



The development platform provides the functionalities for exhibition of monito ing data.The architecture of the development platform is described in Fig. 2(a), which can directly make the connection between any kind of monitoring data and its appropriate presentation method. Fig. 2(b) shows the client-based monitoring system, which UI can be customized by users with the help of the development platform. The temperature field and the velocity field of the whole monitoring area is shown in Fig. 2(c) and Fig.2(d).
